Thinking about switching from glasses to contact lenses, or trying them for the first time? Here's what to know before you buy — especially if you're dealing with Pakistan's dust, heat, and long screen hours.
1. Daily vs Monthly Lenses
Daily disposables are worn once and thrown away — no cleaning solution needed, which makes them the most hygienic option and a good starting point if you're new to lenses. Monthly lenses are reused for up to 30 days with proper cleaning and storage, and work out cheaper per day if you wear lenses often. If you only need lenses occasionally — a wedding, a few days off from glasses — dailies make more sense.
2. Clear vs Colored Contact Lenses
Clear lenses correct your vision the same way glasses do, in the same SPH/CYL prescription format. Colored (cosmetic) lenses can be worn with or without a prescription, and range from natural-looking tints to full opaque colors. Both types still need to fit your eye's curvature correctly — cosmetic lenses aren't "one size fits all," even without a vision correction need.
3. Dealing with Dust and Heat
Pakistan's dusty roads and hot, dry weather can make lenses feel uncomfortable by the end of the day. A few things help: keep rewetting drops on hand, avoid rubbing your eyes outdoors, and consider daily lenses during peak dust season since you're not reusing a lens that's collected debris. If you're on a two-wheeler often, wraparound sunglasses over your lenses cut down on wind-dried eyes significantly.
4. Basic Hygiene Rules
- Always wash and dry your hands before touching a lens
- Never rinse lenses with tap water — use proper contact lens solution only
- Don't sleep in lenses unless they're specifically approved for extended wear
- Replace your lens case every 1-3 months
- Stop wearing and see an eye doctor if you notice redness, pain, or blurred vision
5. Getting Your First Prescription
A contact lens prescription is different from a glasses prescription — it includes your eye's base curve and diameter, not just SPH/CYL. If you've never worn lenses before, it's worth getting fitted by an optometrist first to make sure the curve matches your eye shape comfortably.
